Trio Mokili play roots and jazz-inflected arrangements of music from across the African continent that spiral into deep improvisations informed by the other work. Guitarist Nathaniel Braddock is a well-known practitioner of African guitar styles, leading the Occidental Brothers Dance Band Int'l and Air Congo, and collaborating extensively with musicians from Mali, Ghana, Zambia, and Congo. Braddock is joined on drums by Makaya McCraven known as a star of the new jazz and for his chart topping records "Universal Beings" (2018) and "In The Moment" (2015). Bassist Junius Paul--known for his work with Makaya, Roscoe Mitchell, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and Dee Alexander--brings peofound groove and dazzling improvisational intuition to make this music a rootsy and riveting live experience invoking both the golden age of African guitar music and the experimentation of the avant garde.
